Understanding Adjusting Journal Entries

Often, prepaid expenses require an adjusting entry at the end of a financial year, and an additional one when the asset’s value has been fully incurred. The primary distinction between cash and accrual accounting is in the timing of when expenses and revenues are recognized. With cash accounting, this occurs only when money is received for goods or services. Accrual accounting instead allows for a lag between payment and product (e.g., with purchases made on credit). A company usually has a standard set of potential adjusting entries, for which it should evaluate the need at the end of every accounting period. Also, consider constructing a journal entry template for each adjusting entry in the accounting software, so there is no need to reconstruct them every month.

There is no adjustment in the adjustment columns, so the Cash balance from the unadjusted balance column is transferred over to the adjusted trial balance columns at $24,800. Interest Receivable did not exist in the trial balance information, so the balance in the adjustment column of $140 is transferred over to the adjusted trial balance column. Prepaid expense

Accrual-based accounting is a popular method for big companies, as it uses the double-entry accounting method, which is more accurate and conforms with the generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
